ROBIN DEIRKAUF 1946—2019

robin-mailWe have very sad news to share with you. Robin Deirkauf, interdisciplinary artist, teacher, coach and inspirator at our Interfaculty, from its conception in 1989 until his retirement in 2011, unexpectedly passed away last week. We are astonished by this.

Robin, being a unique and genuine artist and teacher, was a much-loved and life-changing influence on many generations of students in and around our department. His manner of teaching was from the heart: through unforgettable courses and essential coaching, always natural, always spot-on, with love and care for students and the interdisciplinary arts. A great inspiration for his colleague teachers — especially for those of us who had the luck to be his student first, becoming his colleague later. On top of everything, Robin was an unstoppable creative force in many collaborative projects the Interfaculty created on numerous locations over the years. The ArtScience Interfaculty would not have existed the way it does today without Robin’s enormous involvement and influence. This is how he will live on with us.

We will miss Robin’s cunning views, his enthousiasm and his vivid humour greatly. The spirit of his thoughts will however be forever present in the Interfaculty, to inspire many more generations of students to come.

We wish Anny, Raymond, Bella and their families much strength to deal with the large gap he left. Robin was a truly special, lovely and unforgettable man.

In Situ: Fort1881 / Operation Maasmond

The exhibition OPENS ON THE 2nd DECEMBER 18.00 – 23.00
aerial-hvh-cargo-lr
During the month of November, students and (guest) teachers of the ArtScience Interfaculty will prepare an exhibition in Fort1881 Hoek van Holland near Rotterdam.

Students will dive into the complex and layered history of an area which underwent an extreme make-over during the past 150 years. The “Hook” of Holland is an emblematic landscape so typical for the Netherlands for it reveals to us the irreversible impact man and technology have on our surrounding landscape. Not only in this century, but already back in the 18th century engineers, geologists and physicists were experimenting with techniques to shape the surface of the Hook, leaving behind a landscape that is completely man-made.

As a (con)temporary commanding crew of the fortification we set off to create new ideas, impressions and images for a story that has been told many times. Each time the story was told, it was from a different perspective revealing multiple histories that constitute this site. The “In Situ” project is another attempt to contribute to these histories.
Fortress 1881 is our vehicle for doing so, carrying us back in time, launching us towards a projected future in which the adversities of this area become hypothetical scenarios for landscape futures.
During the residency participants will develop several installations that are going to be exhibited in Fort1881 from Friday 2nd December 2016 until Friday 6th January 2017.

The exhibition will be opened on December 2nd.
ArtScience bachelor and master students participating in this workshop are:
Jan Boudestijn, Beng Yuenyong, Maarten Brijker, Kay Churcher, Nina Lezaic, Cameron Lobdell, Falco Pols, Andreas Sahl Andersen and June Yu.
Project by Michiel Pijpe, Onno Dirker and Christian van der Kooy.

Sand Songs at the Zandmotor, featuring ArtScience students and alumni

sandsongsiii presents:
Sand Songs: playing the elements at the Zandmotor

18th June 2016, 19 – 24 hrs, Argusmast, Zandmotor (near Kijkduin)

The artist-run platform iii invites us to explore the coastline of South Holland as a playground for new sensory experiences. Following Kaffe Matthew’s Pedalling SeaSides at Kijkduin in 2015, iii has commissioned a new series of experiental artworks that engage with open space and natural elements, and that playfully involve the audience.

The Zandmotor is an artifical peninsula, constructed as a defence against coastal erosion. This experimental solution uses the natural movement of the tides to replenish the beaches and reinforce the coastline. Thus a temporary landscape was generated: an open, spacious, continually changing expanse right next to the densely populated Randstad. A unique area, popular with strollers, surfers, birdwatchers and sunlovers, but also a place where nature and science merge.

For Sand Songs, a group af artists was invited to imagine this landscape as if it were a musical instrument, played by the natural elements and by human intervention. The artists developed performances and musical compositions especially for the landscape of the Zandmotor. In a series of short and longer interventions, they make use of sound, light, the wind, water flow and the sand in new and inventive ways. Flying a kite becomes a new way to make electronic music; home made pulse jet motors generate a composition on the scale of a landscape; there are kinetic wind and light sculptures; a soundwalk guides you along as you walk blindfolded, and you can take part in a musical treasure hunt, searching for sounding objects buried in the sand.

NOTE: register by sending an email to manon@iiinitiative.org to receive instructions and updates

Works by: Marije Baalman, Lars Kynde, Tobias Lukassen, Christian Liljedahl, Anna Lemnaru, Grzegorz Marcinak, Maya Verlaak, Adam Basanta, David Pocknee, Tena Lazerevic, Jesse Smits, Kay Churcher, Cecile Gentili, Sophie Rust.

Location: Argusmast, Zandmotor
The Zandmotor is an artificial peninsula on the coast between Kijkduin and Monster. From the Haagweg there is a bicylce path through the dunes to the beach. Especially for Sand Songs, the public will be picked up at the bicycle stand in the dunes and escorted to the location of the performances. Do you want to attend? Please register at manon@iiinitiative.org and we will inform you on the route (by car, bicycle and public transport) and what you need to know when visiting the Zandmotor.

The program of Sand Songs is produced within iii’s international artist-in-residence program, in collaboration with the ArtScience Interfaculty, Satellietgroep and TodaysArt and with the support of the Creative Industries Fund NL and Stroom Den Haag.

ArtScience Interfaculty

The ArtScience Interfaculty, founded in 1989 by Frans Evers and Dick Raaijmakers, offers an interdisciplinary Bachelor and Master programme that fosters curiosity driven research as approach for the making of art. While situated between the Royal Academy of Art and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, the ArtScience Interfaculty collaborates closely with Leiden University’s Academy for Creative and Performing Arts and Media Technology MSc programme. The ArtScience Interfaculty has an extensive history of producing its own events outside of the school and initiated the Sonic Acts festival together with Paradiso and the Institute for Sonology in 1994.
The ArtScience Interfaculty has three key elements that make it unique in The Netherlands and the world: an interdisciplinary approach to the different disciplines; it considers art and science as a continuum and promotes interconnecting the two; furthermore it combines an experiential approach with a conceptual approach of art.

Rites for a New Utopia

Rites for a New Utopia

Rites for a New Utopia is a program organized by iii and part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the ArtScience Interfaculty. The program includes ArtScience alumni Mariska de Groot, Lars Kynde, Matteo Marangoni and Dieter Vandoren and furthermore Horst Rickels, one of the Interfaculty’s former heads and longtime lecturer.

March 28th 2015, Grote Kerk, Den Haag

Tickets: €12 full price, €6.50 students

Rites of a New Utopia is part of the March 28th edition of Dag in de Branding: a festival for contemporary music which takes place four times a year in various theaters and locations in The Hague.

NH_NewUtopia_A2_03

Utopias are by definition places that do not exist. Nevertheless the very real remains of past utopian projects are all around us and keep informing our imagination and aspirations. In the process of creating models of the world as it could be rather then of how it is, radical art practices have often reinvented social and material modes of production as a playground for broader social change.

Rites for a New Utopia is a theatrical event that responds to two aspirations: the dream of abolishing traditional social hierarchies, enacted by refusing to accept the rigid separation between composer, performer, instrument maker and audience, and the ambition of returning to an ancestral unity of the arts by combining image, sound, space, movement and the body within the continuum of esthetic experience.

The program will feature two new works for the 17th century carillon of the Grote Kerk by Lars Kynde and Ángel Faraldo, exposing the particular overtone structure of the church bells from different spatial perspectives. Mariska de Groot, Matteo Marangoni and Dieter Vandoren will explore new forms of interaction between performers, audience and the hosting space through a swarm of artificial creatures which will mingle with the audience, and Matteo Marangoni will present a new site-specific iteration of his kinetic sculptures employing free aerophones to probe the boundaries of the heard and the unheard sound spectrum. The evening will end with a special performance of Partita for Variable Air Compression by Horst Rickels, a seminal work of Dutch sound art which was first presented in The Hague in 1989 and which will be performed by Rickels on his self-made organ Mercurius Wagen.

Horst-Rickels-Mercurius-Wagen

Rites for a New Utopia is presented by the artist-run platform iii in cooperation with Het Nutshuis and Dag in de Branding and is part of the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the ArtScience Interfaculty. The program is made possible with the additional support of the Municipality of The Hague, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, the Creative Industries Fund NL and the Danish Arts Foundation.

Ángel Faraldo

Ángel Faraldo in an experimental musician interested in the systematic exploration of processes that maximize minimal resources. Active as a composer and improviser, his work extends into sound installations, site-specific performances and sound design for dance and opera.

Mariska de Groot

Intrigued by the phenomena and history of optical sound, Mariska de Groot makes and performs comprehensive analog light-to-sound instruments and installations which explore this principle in new ways.

Lars Kynde

Lars Kynde is a composer who develops new instruments and new systems of music notation. By building physical sculptures, mechanical machines, and three dimensional scores he seek new ways of constructing and comprehending musical structures.

Matteo Marangoni

Matteo Marangoni is a DIY enthusiast that operates at the margins of various artistic disciplines. His practice investigates the perception of space and the subject-object dichotomy through processes that articulate the real within idiosyncratic rituals.

Horst Rickels

Horst Rickels is a composer, multi-intrumentalists and instrument maker. For many of his projects, the starting points are the site-specific qualities of a space. His work with new instruments focuses on the principle of instability of tuning-systems.

Dieter Vandoren

Drawing from his diverse backgrounds in music, informatics and interactive architecture, he is currently occupied with the development and performance of spatial, immersive audiovisual instruments with a strong focus on the embodied aspect of performance.

Preview ArtScience

Hydra-facebook2The ArtScience Interfaculty at the Royal Academy of the Arts and the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag will present their preview exhibition to showcase the graduation works by bachelor and master students in their final stages.

The exhibition will take place on Friday, May 23rd at 20:00, at GEMAK Vrije Academie in Den Haag. The exhibition will continue until Sunday, May 25, 17:00.

The exhibition carries the title “The Royal Institute of Hydra Studies”; a way of presenting 11 different artistic practices in a cohesive manner; a creature of many heads that nevertheless belong to one body.
The Hydra was a mythological creature that shared the world with people: there was a real fear of its presence. It was a many-headed snake from the marshes of Lerna, whose heads grew back twofold as they were severed by Hercules.

The many headed creature stands for a gathering of autonomous minds who often have contradictory ideas but nevertheless share a common disciplinary background, and therefore a certain degree of consensus. We honour the heritage of the Royal educational facilities that we attend with the title The Royal Institute of Hydra Studies: we elevate this stubborn mythical creature to a level worthy of serious research, whether it be artistic, scientific or poetic in nature.

11 students are graduating: Bachelors Moritz Alive, Áron Birtalan, John Fanning, Gaby Felten and Ronald Schelfhout, and Masters Sebastian Frisch, Jonathan Reus, Jet Smits, Angela de Weijer and Emily Whitebread.
The biographies of these graduating artists can be found at http://stichting.interfaculty.nl/

This exhibition is made possible by GEMAK Vrije Academie, Fonds 1818, Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten, Koninklijk Conservatorium te Den Haag, Vedett Beer, and Stichting ArtScience.

MADCOW

MADCOW
The Nieuwe Persvoeder Fabriek ruminated.

with: Andreas Andersen, Naja Ankarfeldt, Aron Birtalan, Victoria Douka-Doukopoulou, Moritz Geremus, Marius Mathisrud, Falco Pols, Jet Smits, Bas Stoker, Beng Yuenyong facilitated by Wietske Maas and Cocky Eek

Over the month of November, 10 international ArtScience students spent 10 days in the Nieuwe Persvoeder Fabriek, working towards a combined performance that explores the vertical tower and uncovers how the factory can become a site of new sensory digestions.

The single night performance breathes new life into the old factory architecture: pipes and funnels burp and belch with sound; grain scuttles through the old cyclones; invisible air is rendered visible; a rhythmic manifesto resuscitates the cyclical nature of the machines; handwork transitions to machine production and oral history bellows from the basement. The performance poetically subverts the clockwork metabolism of the industrial food chain from molasses to the cow, to the suspensive sensory experiences of art.

The public is warmly invited to experience the fruits of this artistic assembly line: 29 November at 21:00 – Meeting point:De Compagnie (CHV- terrein),  NCB-Laan 52, 5462 GE Veghel

This project has been made possible with the kind support of Kunstgroep de Compagnie.
With special thanks to Henk van Wanrooij.
Aron Birtalan: a rhythmic manifesto written on the floor resuscitates the cyclical nature of the machines in the tower.

VOLTA @ The Age of Wonder

The ArtSience Interfaculty is very proud to announce the 4th reenactment of the theatrical installation VOLTA By Dick Raaijmakers

The Age of Wonder takes place from 28 – 30 march and is part of The 100th year anniversary of the NATLAB in Eindhoven and is organized by BALTAN Laboratories

Design by Taco Stolk

VOLTA | Dick Raaijmakers (Maastricht, 1 sept. 1930 – Den Haag, 4 sept. 2013)

In 1800, Alessandro Volta tried, for the first time in history, to construct an electric battery,
later to be called the ‘voltaic pile’.
Raaijmakers’s performance ‘Volta’ aims to repeat this invention on a gigantic scale.
In the presence of an audience, a small group of workers construct a giant pile of zinc and
copper plates, alternated with clothes drenched in acid. After placing the last plate, this colossal battery will produce the energy for one light bulb, suspended from the ceiling.
Thus, the audience can experience the relation between the invested labor and the resulting electric energy. And also, how and why the original visual quality of this ‘proto-element’ has been lost in favor of the efficiency of the modern battery.

‘Volta’ intends to recreate this lost plasticity, if only for a single moment

In memoriam exhibition Klaus Baumgärtner (1948−2013)

Klaus Baumgärtner passed away this summer. For many years he was a beloved member of the staff of the ARtScience Interfaculty as well as the Fine Arts Department of the KABK. We will miss his passion, his art, his teaching and his friendship.

Johan van Oord (Head of Department of Fine Arts) writes:

Klaus is a master in many disciplines: in fine arts, in book design and in art education, to name a few. Saying goodbye, however, does not belong to his greatest talents. That is why we invite you to get together, with friends, family, colleagues, students and with a selection of his magical ideas, at the Royal Academy where he was brilliant for so many years. Not to say goodbye, but to gather memories, like the way Klaus gathered to create new life.

The exhibition will be openend by Johan van Oord on Fr 08 Nov 2013, 15.00h

Gallery, Royal Academy of Art, Prinsessegracht 4, 2514AN Den Haag (NL)
The exhibition is open from 08 until 15 Nov 2013
Opening hours: Mo-Th 09.00—21.00h, Fr 09.00—17.00h
In de Galerie van de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten.

Dick Raaijmakers: Cahier-M: A Brief Morphology of Electric Sound (2000)

Cahier-M is about the morphology of electric sound. This inherently single-layered type of sound is discussed in the light of ‘neo-plastic’ music as suggested by the painter Piet Mondriaan in the 1920′s. He advocated a kind of music that consisted of single-layered, ‘single-colour’ electric sounds.

Furthermore, Cahier-M devotes ample attention to the morphological relationship between the typically uniform nature of electric sound and the multi-layered sound structures used by post-WWII serial composers. The discussion of this subject also covers layering (photo)graphic images as practised by the French physiologist E.J. Marey at the end of the 19th century, flipping monadic sound aggregates as practised by Karel Goeyvaerts since 1952, the application of so-called ‘horizontal arpeggios’ by Pierre Boulez around 1980, and the introduction of ‘liquid forms’ in contemporary architecture.

These aspects are illustrated based on a still valid morphological analysis of sound conducted by the author between 1963 and 1967.

Cahier-M comprises four chapters: ‘Invented Sound’, ‘Diagonal Sound’, ‘Composed Sound’ and ‘Spatial Sound’.

Sphæræ at Ars Electronica

ArtScience and Synergetica Lab present Sphæræ at Ars Electronica 2013 with a jam-packed program of performances.

the ArtScience Interfaculty and Synergetica Lab present a series of multi-sensory performances and installations in the context of synthetic biology. Transpiring inside Sphæræ, an inflatable multi-dome pavilion created by Cocky Eek, these spherically projected artworks evoke the transformation of prebiotic conditions into the complex behavior and dimensionality of synthesized living cells.

Sphæræ will be in front of the Ars Electronica Center on the bank of Danube River, offering a full program of performances, talks, and installations during all 5 days of the festival, September 5th – 9th.

With works by Martijn van Boven (NL), Evelina Domnitch & Dmitry Gelfand (BY/NL), Cocky Eek (NL), Eduard Haiman & Michael Holub & V4W.ENKO & Vadim Smakhtin (RU/UA), Theun Karelse (NL), Francisco López (NL/SP), Bas van Koolwijk (NL),  Matthijs Munnik (NL), Eric Parren (US), Nenad Popov & Erfan Abdi (NL), Paul Prudence (UK), Joris Strijbos & Yamila Rios (NL), Dieter Vandoren (BE) & Mariska de Groot (NL) and an introduction by Arthur I.
